2021 - Portfolio Review (27Dec2021)

Image
2021 has been a good year for me. though my overall portfolio remains in the red, I am thankful to have learned much.   Personally, investing is not just for the sole reason of financial independence.  With more financial security, it is about  gaining more time for the people and purposes I am passionate about .  Money can help us to do things simultaneously - sponsor a kid's education in Africa, support disaster recoveries for different countries, invest in sustainable solutions, getting help so that I have more with my family & interests.  I have been reminding myself that  time is the most expensive commodity and health is a close second .  These help me to prioritise my time towards my family, passions and friends. Biggest (paper) losses As of today, my biggest (paper) loss remains ‌‌ $Alibaba(BABA)$   ‌and I am still planning to DCA this regularly.  I remain hopeful for the growth of this company and time will prove me brave or...

My investing muse - we are NOT the customers of social media and $DIDI (04Dec2021)

If we are not paying, we are not the customers. In the world of social media, we are known as users. When we log in, we log in with our user ID, not a customer ID.   We, the users are the commodity of social media.   Our usage and social media data are “sold” by social media companies - to companies who used targeted ads to sell their products and services to us. Key issues that concern the Chinese authorities are monopolistic practice and mishandling of user data. Didi said in a statement that having its app removed “may have an adverse impact on its revenue in China.“It promised to fix any problems, “protect users’ privacy and data security, and continue to provide secure and convenient services to its users.” As these practices are corrected, users can feel safer about their personal data - a positive move in the long run. As for  $DiDi Global Inc.(DIDI)$ , we can expect them to be back in business  once  they have adequately addressed the concerns of the aut...

Websites I use for my trade setup - Part 4 of 4 (03Dec2021)

After I got into investing, I started to research various investing gurus. It is no surprise that I found myself attracted to value investors like Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger, Li Lu, Mohnish Pabrai, Guy Spier and Nick Sleep. I have also read up on Chamath Palihapitiya and Ray Dalio. Over time, I saw the success of their investments and started to follow their investments, learning their investing philosophies along the way. We  should not be following the investors blindly  just because they are successful.  We need to find an investing strategy that fit our goals, our personality, our investment time horizon and risk-reward ratio . If we are willing to research before we buy our mobile phone, car or homes, let us be willing to do the necessary research coming to investments. With managed risks, we would be able to invest with better confidence. 4. Dataroma.com Dataroma is a website that tracks the 13F filings of the top 73 super investors. <From Investopedia> Th...

Websites I use for my trade setup - Part 3 of 4 (01Dec2021)

As part of my qualification of companies, I will use www.Quickfs.net to   obtain 10 years overview , income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement and key ratios. This is to   supplement Yahoo Finance that only provide financial data for the last 4-5 years . In general, I am looking for an uptrend and I can “accept” 1 or 2 years of “less than adequate” performance. More importantly, a good company should demonstrate that they can cope with bad times like the Covid 2020 hit 2020-2021 where we should   expect   quicker than average recovery. 3. Quickfs.net My favourite screen is actually the “overview” page - which shows key ratios (P/E, P/B, P/S), 10-year median returns, margins, 10-year CAGR, key financial info over the last 10 years. In a quick glance, I would be able to get good key information about the business. Revenue and EPS are good guides about the business but these do not provide enough details into the businesses. The details are needful so that we...
