Top S&P500 stocks by Calendar Years (13Jul2023)
Visual Capitalist has published a list of the top S&P500 stocks by annual returns for 2022.
The above is the list from 1980. For 2020, the top-performing company is Tesla.
The following is the list of top-performing businesses by categories:
In the consumer discretionary sector, the top-performing company is Tesla in 2020.
As we enter the 2nd half of 2023, are these companies still performing? I will treat the list as a filter where I will add analysis to qualify these businesses.
The stock price may not always reflect the value of the business. Thus, we should always seek to buy stocks with a reasonable margin of safety. This will help us to mitigate the risk of price volatility. The market is capable to be irrational longer than we can be solvent. Thus, I avoid short-term positions.
I recommend looking into the financial statements and looking out for moat (competitive advantages) to work out a fair price for the business. Add a margin of safety and we would have a target purchase price. Let us not forget due diligence.
