News and geopolitical outlook
Ukraine conflict drags on as the peace talks fail to provide a resolution. However, the talks have improved. A recent attack on Russian soil has brought back some tension. China's Shanghai lockdown looks to continue. This has brought the commerce capital of China to a standstill. There remain concerns about the energy crisis, food supplies, fertilizer supplies and agricultural supplies like wheat. China has agreed with the Solomon Islands to set up a military presence in the Pacific, bringing concerns from USA and Australia. Sri Lanka has declared a state of emergency following violent protests due to energy, food and medicine shortages. Some of the real estate companies suspended their trading in the HKEX as they failed to submit their financial reports before the due date of 31 Apr 2022. Let us monitor closely how this may unfold. The inverted yield curve (US 2 & 10-year treasury rate) which preceded the last few recessions was spotted.
